Abstract. The article gives scientific opinions and "na?ve" points of view on the essence of such speech components as a question and an answer. By the material of the statements of well-known English-speaking workers of culture, science and social sphere, the subject of which are a question and an answer, the features of an evaluative component are revealed, which the metalinguistic consciousness of successful representatives of English-speaking society correlates with the speech units under study.
