The article aims at studying the specific features of abbreviation, finding its productive models in the sub-standard layer of vocabulary, namely, in the lexicon of the English sea sublanguage. The accumulation of information and the analysis of the processes of new words formation in the field of professional vocabulary seem relevant, and these allow identifying the new trends existing in the language. The main attention is focused on the concepts "uncodified sea sublanguage", "acopa", "asymmetry of the linguistic sign", and "acronyms".
