Abstract. The article analyzes the potentials of an essay as a form of students’ autonomous work. The author makes a comparison with an exploratory synopsis genre, identifies the peculiarities of an essay as a synthetic type of research requiring the combination of scientific character and autonomy, manifesting individuality. The paper formulates the basic requirements for the works in an essay genre, summarizes the author’s personal experience of teaching the disciplines "Russian language and culture of speech" and "Rhetoric".
