Abstract. The article considers the use of capital letters when writing common nouns in texts of the Russian language textbooks of the XIX century, created by famous linguists. The purpose of the work, on the one hand, is to follow the process of the formation of the rules for writing common nouns with capital letters in the texts of the XIX century and on the other hand, to determine the significance of the selected groups of appellatives. The ongoing analysis of the original texts of the XIX century allows expanding the understanding of the relationship between onyms and appellatives.
