Abstract. The article characterizes a special epistolary genre - a "letter to the leader" genre. The author presents a brief analysis of a letter-declaration by A. I. Solzhenitsyn "Letter to the Soviet Leaders" (a kind of "lesson to the tsars") and his dispute with A. D. Sakharov on this text. Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov have different views on the existing ideology, on the national problem, on democratization of the country, on the destiny of the Russian people in the XX century. The paper also investigates the perception of the debates between Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov by M. Agursky.
