Abstract. The article considers the functioning in the story "A Provincial Tale" the motive of a fool, one of the major ones in the creative work of Y. I. Zamyatin who reconstructed the vast continent of national stupidity. The understanding of the artistic existence of this motive is carried out through the analysis of the richest system of folk poetry, folk world perception and world outlook in its close internal correlation with the writer’s original system.
