THE INTRALINGUISTIC CONDITIONALITY OF QUANTITATIVE ASYMMETRY OF DIPHTHONG SYSTEMS OF AMERICAN AND BRITISH ENGLISH

Abstract. As there is no conventional opinion in modern linguistics on diphthong inventory of the English language in its different varieties the comparative analysis of diphthong systems in the American and British vocalism is still topical. In the article the comparison of these systems reveals their quantitative asymmetry. The author makes an emphasis on the identification of intralinguistic factors of such asymmetry which come to the operation of reducing processes in American English.
