Abstract. The attempt to analyze taboo lexis in the English romance and chick lit from the point of view of the existing gender stereotypes is undertaken. Genre choice is accounted for the changes in women’s social and psychological status that influenced the appearance of new narration forms - chick lit. Thus the modifications of gender stereotypes under the influence of extra linguistic factors are singled out. The hypothesis about the assimilation of masculine patterns of obscene word usage by females is confirmed.
