Abstract. The semantics of boredom and the metaphor "book-friend" in the Russian lyric poetry of the 1810-1820s are considered in the article. The poets of the Golden Age realize the negative influence of boredom and overcome it; anacreontic merriment, Horace’s principle of "golden mean" and books-friends - Horace’s lyric poetry - are among the "medicines" for tiresome yawning. The metaphor "book-friend" is opposed to the phenomenon of boring texts - the philosophical works of Plato and Kant, and also the writings of ungifted pedants and scribblers.
