ROLE OF MEMORY IN HISTORY. "THE BEWITCHED" BY J. BARBEY D’AUREVILLY - HISTORICAL MEMOIR NOVEL

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of historical novel by J. Barbey d’Aurevilly "The Bewitched" (1855) in the context of understanding the role of memory in history and particularly in the representation of past event in fiction. The analysis is intended to detect the place of the writer’s historical works in the tradition of historical novel genre in the XIX century. Consideration of "The Bewitched" in this context allows noticing that the images of the past in the novel get through the light of subjectiveness - the memoirs which intersecting and superposing onto each other make the special structure of narration of memoir novel.
