Abstract. The paper focuses on the semantics of abbreviations and phraseological units and the mechanisms of its formation taking into account the linguo-culturological features of the British society and the status of English as the language of international communication; the stereotypical way of thinking and the language aspiration to information unification are emphasized by the example of word-formative models; the issue on the predictability of the meaning of new abbreviation and phraseological units derivatives is put forward that is very important for terminology as terminological word combinations carry out the function of exact nomination in any branch of human knowledge.
