MECHANISM OF PROSODIC EMPHASIS OF EXTENDED PIECES OF SPEECH AT PUBLIC AND SCIENTIFIC SPEECHES

Abstract. The subject matter of the article is the mechanism of prosodic emphasis of extended pieces of speech predominating in the public and scientific speeches of native-speakers of the British English language. The author’s attention is concentrated upon the behavior of prosodic devices used to emphasize all the extended part of speech on the whole but not the separate components of it. As the part of study the consistent patterns which are characteristic to this mechanism are detected, the ways of its theoretical justification are suggested.
