AFRICAN AMERICAN DETECTIVE FICTION: VIEWPOINTS OF CONTEMPORARY LITERARY CRITICS AND POLEMICS

Abstract. The article analyzes the new approaches to the classification of detective fiction subgenres on the basis of ethnic, racial and national principles. The author pays special attention to the research of black detective tradition in which the use of detective conventions is submitted to the representation of ethnic identity and struggle of blacks for equality in the American society. Close connection between the African American detective fiction and historical context of the USA is illustrated by the example of protagonists’ characters transformation and positive change in the perception of the problem of Otherness in the discourse of popular literature.
