Abstract. The article considers the evolution of the pragmatic potential of the French argot that is resulted in a change of its status and role in the language. The main features of argot in the modern French language are analyzed. The author reveals a new feature in the French argot - a characterological one through which argotisms act as a productive source of the completion of a writing and literary language, thereby participating in the formation of standards, and the development and renovation of the French language.
