INTERPRETATIONS OF I. S. TURGENEV’S WORKS BY OPERA LIBRETTISTS

Abstract. The article is devoted to the "translation" of a literary text from the language of mono-media art (literature) into the language of multimedia art (musical theatre). Analyzing from the philological viewpoint three opera librettos created on the basis of I. S. Turgenev’s works the author reveals the regularities of transforming the literary source into its musical scenic representation. The special attention is paid to the problem of citing - both textual (fragments from Turgenev’s and other authors’ works) and musical.
