LEXICAL-SEMANTIC METHODS OF FORMING EUPHEMISMS (BY THE EXAMPLE OF ARTICLES IN THE AMERICAN AND BRITISH PRESS)

Abstract. The purpose of this article is to present the spectrum of lexical means of euphemisation in the English language. The material of the research is euphemistic expressions of the modern English language, obtained by the method of continuous sampling of the British and American newspapers illustrating the modern English language. In this paper the euphemistic units and phrases, not recorded in the dictionaries, are analyzed in detail. To achieve this goal, the following methods are used: a logical method; methods of definitional and contextual analysis; a descriptive method; a method of structural-semantic description; a comparative method.
