Abstract. The article considers the functional properties of a symbol and artistic image. These objects are similar in their semiotic structure, are used in intercrossing contexts, are included in interacting systems, and they are the forms and methods of reality development and transformation. In contrast to the artistic image, characterized by local and individual nature, the aesthetic vector of direction, the actualization of rethinking, being faced to a person, the symbol is universal and collective, it is directed to existential, focuses meaningful and addresses the world.
