ESSAY OF VARLAM SHALAMOV FOR MAGAZINE AS IMPULSE FOR WRITING SOME STORIES OF CYCLES "LEFT BANK" AND "THE GLOVE, OR KR-2"

Abstract. The unpublished article by Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov about surgeon Vladimir Petrovich Demikhov for the magazine "Moscow" was an impulse for V. T. Shalamov to write the cycle "Kolyma Tales" about the doctors who saved his life in the camp. The stories about doctors became central in two cycles: "Left Bank" and "The Glove, or KR-2". "In One Laboratory" is an example of the writer’s work in journalistic genre, the continuation of "Essays of the Underworld" and many portrait essays of V. T. Shalamov’s contemporaries. One of the ideas embodied in it is the possibility of a surgeon to save and prolong a human life. Ethical questions related to the influence of the doctor on the life of a person were resolved in the journalistic article in 1957 and "Kolyma Tales" in different ways. The comparison allows revealing the function which the world of the hospital played in "Kolyma Tales".
