Abstract. The author considers the evaluative meaning of English proverbs which can be either positive or negative. The proverb is a complete statement, which expresses certain evaluative reasoning, which may be presented either explicitly or implicitly. Metaphor as a trope, formed on the basis of similarity, is organically conditioned to express implicitly the evaluative meaning of proverbs.
