MOTIVE OF MADNESS IN L. N. ANDREEV’S PROSE OF THE 1890S

Abstract. The author discusses one of the fundamental motives of Leonid Andreev’s creative work – the motive of madness, and considers the diversity of writer’s interpretation of madness theme by the example of early works (the 1890s): attention to in-between states and the unexplained phenomena of human psyche, the philosophical understanding of the problem of "madness of the world", the mentioning of "mental epidemics", the reference to the phenomenon of idiocy.
