Abstract. The author considers the features of a symbol that distinguish it from metonymy. In the presence of symbol essential opposition to metonymy as a sign to trope they are united by the presence of adjacency in signified. However, the adjacency has a different character in a number of functional properties: orientation, binarity, logicality, the compressive character of metonymy and distraction, panrelativity, illogicality and enantio-semantics, the cumulative character of a symbol.
