Abstract. The author reveals the role of independent work in the formation of learning-cognitive competence of nonlinguistic higher education establishment students as one of the future specialist’s key educational competencies in the process of learning a foreign language, shows the different types of independent work for students learning a foreign language, and gives the examples from the experience of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University.
