Abstract. The author analyzes the creative work of F. A. Zheltov, a little-known to a wide circle of readers Nizhny Novgorod writer of the end of the XIX th – the beginning of the XX th century. In his time the following stories were known: "On the Volga, or Evil does not Help Grief", "Quagmire", "Bone and Gold", "Bell Ringer", "Gone Wrong" and so on. Currently F. A. Zheltov’s creative work is forgotten. The correspondence of F. A. Zheltov with L. N. Tolstoi was published only in 1999. F. A. Zheltov created works about peasants’ life, the peasant way of life, as well as the works of religious-philosophical content. F. A. Zheltov’s creative work is of considerable interest to the modern reader, as it adds an enormous fragment to the Russian literature – namely, the fragment of "peasant literature".
