Abstract. The author analyzes the "Napoleonic" cycle of M. Yu. Lermontov, and traces the evolution of author’s position from the worship of Napoleon’s military talent, his genius to the condemnation of desire for glory through war, death and human suffering. Lermontov’s ideal of a superman, satisfied with proud solitude, focused exclusively on the spiritual world, introspection, is transformed into an ordinary man who is ready for any deed for the sake of happiness.
