Abstract. The author discusses the topical problem of teaching literature at school in the context of new education paradigm by the example of learning the story "Boys" by A. P. Chekhov in the fifth grade, and describes different pedagogical techniques, which use allows forming and developing students’ cognitive universal educational actions.
