ORIGIN OF RIVERS AND LAKES NAMES OF THE RIVER TESHCHA LEFT BANK IN NIZHNII NOVGOROD REGION

Abstract. The author conducts the etymological analysis of hydronyms (names of rivers, lakes, gorges, peaks, etc.) of the river Teshcha basin left bank in Nizhnii Novgorod region, reveals several hydronymic groups having Mordovian origin, i.e. Erza or Moksha on language origin, tells that later, with Slavic settlers coming to this territory, phonetic-structural features of newcomers’ language were superimposed on the Finno-Ugric basis of hydronyms under consideration, and as a result of the research comes to the conclusion that the hydronymy of analyzed zone is mainly the Finno-Ugric and belongs to the Erza language, and, therefore, Mordovians – Erza people are to be considered indigenous.
