Abstract. The author considers the features of symbol that distinguish it from metaphor. In the presence of the essential opposition of symbol to metaphor as sign to trope and as the result of the use these phenomena lead to the expansion of view on the nature of things. However, this expansion has different character, the character that opposes symbol to metaphor for a number of functioning parameters, and the operation of metaphor and symbol involves various thought processes under speech (metaphor), cultural and linguistic (symbol) competencies.
