Abstract. Some stages of language standard development from the point of view of its connections with the man’s generalizing capability are considered in the article. Standard is presented as a generalization form, and proper speech ability – as a communication ordering instrument. In standardization history two contradictory orientations can be singled out: at "language ideal" – and with such accent standard is able to worsen class conflicts; and at live speech practice typicalness that, on the contrary, promotes these conflicts smoothing. Today idealizing and typifying capabilities are standard social functions.
