Abstract. The article considers the common vocabulary that is formed on the basis of toponyms. Drawing on the works of contemporary researchers, as well as a number of the most revealing facts of the German language, the author concludes that well-known and often used in speech toponyms act as a basis for the secondary nomination. The word-formation activity of toponyms-stems reveals a close relationship with the social significance of the denotations of toponyms.
