Abstract. The article considers the different definitions and methods of using the symbolic patterns in the works of fiction. By the material of several short stories by O. Henry the role of symbols in the revelation of heroes’ images is researched, and the features of O. Henry’s symbolism, where the author’s disposition towards semiotic unraveling of images is the main one, are studied. Special attention is paid to the study of the author’s image by revealing an individual method for creating a symbol.
