FEATURES OF DOCUMENTARY AND FICTION IN "LONDON: THE BIOGRAPHY" BY PETER ACKROYD

Abstract. The article is devoted to the creative work of famous British writer Peter Ackroyd. The aim of the paper is to reveal the genre specificity of his book "London: The Biography". The article considers the features of documentary and fiction. Prevailing images, symbols, leit-motives are revealed. It is substantiated that P. Ackroyd’s artistic origin is largely achieved through the involvement of literary texts. The list of precedent texts covers almost all the English classics from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Dickens, Eliot, Orwell, and others. The author proves that the book was written at the turn of documentary and fiction, and it is the work of a mixed genre form.
