CULTURAL-PRAGMATIC POTENTIAL OF TOPONYMS IN AMERICAN POEMS OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE XX TH – THE BEGINNING OF THE XXI ST CENTURY

Abstract. The article is devoted to the linguo-cultural analysis of the American poetic discourse of the second half of the XX th – the beginning of the XXI st century, taking into account the use of toponymic names. As a result of the study the main pragmatic functions of toponyms in poetic works, as well as their potential for representing the social-political and cultural aspects of the postmodern American society existence are revealed. In this way, the correlation between the social-cultural environment of the individual’s existence and the selection of linguistic means of its expression on the textual level is ascertained.
