Abstract. The article analyzes the transformation of real object described by Varlam Shalamov in a letter to Boris Pasternak into artistic detail, connecting the stories of 1956-1966. Basing on the analysis of this detail role in the short stories of different cycles the article demonstrates that six cycles of "The Kolyma Tales" form the interconnected whole. In Varlam Shalamov’s prose this detail can play a composition role both within a single cycle, and between them, and can connect disparate plots, helping the reader to reveal the heroes-lookalikes. The article also shows one of the writer’s methods to impart the poetic rhythm and intonation richness to his prose.
