Abstract. In contrast to the previously adopted term "minimization", which defines the evaluative semantics of spatial-temporal and qualitative-quantitative characteristics of objects or phenomena in language utterances, we propose to use the term "extremization" that includes both the semantics of minimization and maximization. The expediency of applying this term is confirmed, in particular, in the practical analysis of the Russian language constructions under consideration and extends the boundaries of studying the reference of utterances.
