Abstract. This article is an examination of Leo Tolstoy’s opinion about the problem of life and death. What is life for the writer, and what is death? The paper gives a philosophical description of Tolstoy’s ideas of death on the basis of the analysis of his works ("War and Peace", "The Death of Ivan Ilyich") and carries out a study of Leo Tolstoy’s humanistic and moral ideas and their significance in the life of the modern man.
