Abstract. The article analyzes the social structure of the service class of southern Russian towns according to the estimate of 1651 and towns’ inventory of 1678. Relying on the calculations the authors describe regional social processes associated with the reformation of Russian troops. The paper concludes that the amount of servicemen grew though the percentage of servicemen’s categories had hardly changed, which finally resulted in the appearance of numerous servicemen’s relatives, who were not enlisted due to the lack of vacancies. According to the calculations, in 1678 48% of servicemen were not enlisted and referred to the category of "children, nephews and other relatives".
