IDENTITY AND AUTONOMY OF THE ARMENIAN CHURCH: ASPECTS OF ANTI-NESTORIAN CHRISTOLOGY

Abstract. The article analyzes the anti-Nestorian position of the Armenian Apostolic Church on the Christological issue. The paper shows that the Armenian Church’s position is motivated by its dogmatic observation of the Alexandrine theological tradition. The author describes anti-Nestorianism’s social and political influence on Armenian identity. Analyzing original sources of the Armenian Church the researcher concludes that anti-Nestorian Christology served as a basis to preserve the Church’s autonomy and identity.
