Abstract. In the era of the late Empire small catapults, which could be served by one person only, appeared. Among such devices a crossbow that was a small composite bow attached to a wooden carriage played a significant role. The shooting range of the crossbow must have been superior to the one of the usual bow. However, its major drawback was the long process of charging, during which the shooter remained vulnerable to the enemy attack.
