Abstract. The article analyzes historiosophical views by A. K. Tolstoy developed in a series of literary works. The historiosophical conception of the poet and writer has ethical nature. It was established as a result of the organic synthesis in his world outlook of the historical, ethical and artistic aspects of representing the past. According to A. K. Tolstoy, the content of historical process is the struggle of the forces of good and evil manifesting themselves in quite concrete moral and amoral personalities. The authors examine A. K. Tolstoy’s evaluation of certain historical periods (Kievan Rus, Ivan the Terrible’s reign), his attitude to the basic trends of the social thought of Russia in the 19 th century.
