AMMIANUS MARCELLINUS AND PECULIARITIES OF HIS HISTORICAL METHOD
Bannikov Andrei Valer'evich
Saint Petersburg State University
Abstract. "Deeds" by Ammianus Marcellinus is the most important literary source of the IV century. Data that were used by Ammianus were carefully selected and tested. A part of them is based on his personal recollections, another part was obtained from official documents or the writings of the witnesses and direct participants of the events. At the same time the specificity of the future historian’s staff service left a mark on all of his narrative making Ammianus avoid the detailed descriptions of the army actions in the battlefield, which we would expect from a field officer.
