ORGANIZATION OF ROMAN MILITARY FLEETS DURING THE PRINCIPATE

Abstract. Roman regular military fleet appeared during the period of the Emperor Augustus’s reign. Ravenna and Mizen became the main naval bases of the Empire. Along with the central fleets there were also provincial naval forces, the importance of which was much smaller. During the crisis of the III century the provincial squadrons ceased to exist. Therefore the strategy of the Empire naval defense in the IV century was already based on the principles quite different from those that had been introduced by Augustus.
