ON THE PECULIARITIES OF THE IMAGE OF MADHOUSE IN L. N. ANDREYEV’S PROSE

Abstract. The article discusses various interpretations of the image of madhouse in Russian literature by the example of Leonid Nikolaevich Andreyev’s prose. Basing on A. I. Herzen’s, N. S. Leskov’s, M. Ye. Saltykov-Shchedrin’s, E. Poe’s experience the writer refers to the social-philosophical reflection of the theme of madness. The space of madhouse in L. N. Andreyev’s works becomes a place of the characters’ insight, serves as a model of society, as an illustration for the issue of border between normality and madness.
