LATE ROMAN PROJECTILE MACHINERY (CARROBALLISTA, CATAPULT, BALLISTA AND ONAGER)

Abstract. In the era of the Late Roman Empire the Romans kept on actively using projectile machinery that had appeared already in the republican period or had been invented during the epoch of the Principate. The Late Roman artillery could operate both in fields and at the siege and defense of towns and fortresses. The largest machines were onagers and ballistas, which could destroy not only the manpower of the enemy but also its siege towers and fortification structures.
