Abstract. In ancient times there were various types of cargo vessels for the transportation of troops and all the necessary things for the army by sea during the warfare. Initially people and provisions were transported by military vessels or requisitioned merchant ships. At a later time specialized vessels were built for such purposes. Already at the time of the Peloponnesian War the Athenians created horse transport capable of accommodating about 30 riders. Later the Egyptians and the Carthaginians built larger ships of this type, which transported elephants.
