Abstract. The article actualizes and justifies the hypothesis on the literary critic and publicist M. O. Menshikov (1859-1918) as a real prototype of Belikov, the character of the story by A. P. Chekhov "The Man in a Case". Relying on the analysis of the literary texts, the memoirs of Chekhov’s contemporaries, the writer’s diary notes, using the methods of receptive esthetics the authors show how literary associations and life experiences fancifully interwove in Chekhov’s creative consciousness generating a famous image of the "man in a case".
