Abstract. This article considers the prerequisites and factors of sustainable development in the conditions of the traditionally peripheral areas of the North. Within the vast but little-developed territory of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) only the capital of the region, Yakutsk, has the maximum potential for growth pole formation. However poor transport infrastructure and the absence of year-round transport availability do not allow realizing the existing potential. The quickest inclusion of Yakutsk into the all-Russian transport system can contribute to this process.
